Dining Etiquette Skills

Level 1 : Buffet & Canapés

Level 1 introduces children to shared dining settings, where food is self-served and social awareness matters just as much as table manners.

This level focuses on helping children move calmly and confidently through buffet lines, serve themselves appropriately, and handle canapé-style food at parties and events with ease. They learn how to do so without rushing, grabbing, or feeling unsure.

Why This Level Matters

Buffet and canapé settings are often where children feel most uncertain, whether at birthdays, school events, family celebrations or hotel dining occasions.

This level helps children develop:

  • Social awareness

  • Self-control and patience

  • Confidence in unfamiliar environments

  • Respect for others and shared spaces

  • These skills allow children to feel at ease and present themselves positively in social dining situations.

Where These Skills Make a Difference

Children practise skills they can apply in:

  • Social celebrations and parties

  • School events and group gatherings

  • Family occasions and formal settings

  • Hotels, events, and shared dining environments

What Parents Notice

With practice, parents often notice:

  • More confident and respectful behaviour around food

  • Improved awareness of portion sizes and mindful eating

  • Greater patience and turn-taking in shared settings
